Well as you can see it has been a little while since i have posted here. Getting ready to pump it up!

Musicishare who and why

I haven’t posted in a while, so I decided to give visitors a little insight into who is behind musicishare, and why.
I am baggabee. You can find me on the major social networking sites. I am a web developer who was a selector in a former life. I have seen the ins and outs of the music industry from the retail end as well as the street level where music is really evaluated by quality, not excessive radio plays.

I developed musicishare.com as a result of being in contact with many up and coming artists. I find that many artists on the rise will dedicate their budget to developing the product, and not as much on the promotion. Promotion is just as important and even more so, if no one knows about the project you just spent your last thousand dollars on, doesn’t really matter does it.

The music industry today is quite different, and many new artists have the advantage of using many of the new strategies to get promotion. There are many websites out there that allow artists to share their music on the web, sell their music and so on. I felt it would be easier to just give artists another free platform to use to gain more exposure for their music.

I am a fan of the concept of giving people a taste of the music, then if they like it, you just made a new fan, who hopefully will support your career by purchasing future or other offerings. Simple really. Some artists share entire songs, some artists share samples, either way, the potential for more fans increases.

As a web developer, I am always interested in different ways to optimize the website to attract more traffic, and hopefully increasing the amount of people that listen to music our artists members upload to the site. I am also able to stay on top of current trends in multimedia delivery online. We have been using Flash since the start and so far has proven to be the best cross platform delivery of multimedia.

Free Downloads help Music Sales

I have been telling people this for years. I have even built a website intended to help promote artists by offering free downloads( legal downloads). Free Downloads Help Music Sales. Period.

It is a debate that will continue I am sure. I was inspired to write this post, because I came across a great article on the topic. Turns out the author of the article is a Grammy award winning artist. If you were to have a source for support of an argument, who better than a person who is not only in the industry, but has reached heights many artists only dream about.

Janis Ian has recorded with greats like Dolly Parton just to name drop, and has clearly seen the benefits of listeners downloading mp3 songs for free. In her article she mentions how napster, the harbinger of this whole conversation, would drive listeners to her website in search of more information or more music, a small percentage of those would convert to sales online and in stores.

In this age of bubble gum, all sounds the same music, can you blame the consumer for wanting to hear some of the work before investing a hard earned dollar into the artist. I have always said that if the quality of the music would improve, sales would improve, regardless of the download phenomena. Fans have been waiting eight years to hear a new album put together by Jamaica legendary crooner, Spanner Banner. Music and Social Media

Whether you are a new musician or an established artist, making money selling music online may be illusive without the right marketing and promotion. According to several articles I have read, there are some labels successfully making this happen. Some would argue that the quality of the music being offered is the real catalyst to online music sales.

So, it is possible to generate income using the internet to distribute your music. Many artists give away mp3 downloads as a vehicle to introduce new listeners to their sound. Several bands give away music in exchange for your email address, many rappers give music away by contributing to mixtapes, many of which are free downloads. Free is always good especially with music. However, if folks dont know about your download or giveaway, it wont help much will it?

This is a good place to introduce the benefits of social media to market and promote yourself. These concepts are quite universal and could be applied to just about any product you wish to sell or promote, online using social networking websites like MySpace, Facebook, et al.

The most overlooked tool when using social media, is probably demographics. Networking online is tricky at best, you will go through a slew of spammers and get rich quick guys, unless, you research your new buddies, friends or what have you. This is a case where quality surpasses quantity.

Each person you connect with, has the potential to want to share your quality product with the slew of people in their own immediate network. Friends will trust or at least explore the information shared by another friend that they trust. The word viral comes to mind. Potentially, with the right audience *(people who probably like the style of music you are selling, promoting, etc.) you could reach several hundred people instantly.

Just as in life, choose friends, networks, wisely.

The first blog for the 09. Shout out to G-Dep. Famous for “Child of The Ghetto”, and his appearances on several Bad Boy label Remixes. I have been a fan of Dep since those days.

His lates mixtape put together by G-Dep and DJ Enyce, rekindled my need to hear Dep flow. I dusted off the mp3′s of Child Of the Ghetto, while I was visiting his profile on MySpace.
